Our recent trip to Chiang Mai has us staying at The Astra Condo, near Chiang Mai Old City. Our awesome Airbnb host, Lin, provided us with a list of great restaurants and cafes to check out in the area. After browsing through her recommendations, we decided to check out Butter is Better Diner & Bakery, known for its American-style cuisine. Join me as I share our experience at Butter is Better, a charming diner which is located in the heart of Chiang Mai! (´• ω •`)ノ

Why Butter is Better Diner & Bakery?

Since we are surrounded by Thai cuisines, we thought it would be interesting to visit an American-style diner for one of our meals while in Chiang Mai. That is sort of the main reason why we decided to dine at Butter is Better. Another reason is how near this diner is to our condominium and it comes highly recommended by our host. (´• ω •`)

Butter is Better, A Diner Similar to What We See on TV!

The only American-style diner that both hubs and I have ever visited was Billy Bombers when it was still a thing in Singapore. I thought Butter is Better would be similar to Billy Bombers but it was not so. Once we stepped foot into the diner, it felt as if we were teleported into one of those diners we see in American TV shows and I kind of liked it. ( ´ ω ` )

Signage and the interior of Butter is Better Diner & Bakery

We arrived around 4 PM and only a few tables were occupied, which made for a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. I wish I had taken photos of the menu as it was so extensive! It took us forever to decide what to eat. Whatever you can think of from an American diner, I am sure the diner has it on its menu. w(°o°)w

What We Ordered

After repeatedly flipping through the menus, I decided to have a Corned Beef sandwich while hubs ordered the Pulled Pork Burger. We added hash browns and onion rings as our side order as well as a root beer float and chocolate milkshake. To be honest, I think we over-ordered. I have no idea why we did not think that it was too much when we were ordering. Haha! Must be the amount of sleep we got that day after our sunrise tour at Doi Suthep. (*/ω\)

American-sized Portions are Served Here!

Anyway, we DID NOT expect the diner to serve us American-sized portions here. The chocolate milkshake was served in a cup and there was still an extra portion in the shaker. I mean, that was like two servings worth of milkshake for the price of one!? It was super delicious but I did not dare to drink too much because it was so filling. But who am I kidding, we were already expected to NOT be able to finish what we ordered. HAHA!

A subset of the food that we ordered for our lunch - pulled pork burger, root beer float and corned beef sandwich

The hash browns came and it was NOT what I expected. I think they should be called rosti instead of hash browns. (´・ᴗ・ ` ) It was okay but did not really satisfy my craving for hash browns. LOL. The onion rings came looking bigger than expected. Honestly, I think everything came bigger or more than we expected. My corned beef sandwich was SUPER DELICIOUS. I swear if we did not order so much food, I could finish it. It was super delish and you HAVE to order it when you dine here. Hubs enjoyed the pulled pork burger though it was a tad bit heavier in taste than I like it to be.

Overall Experience at Butter is Better

I love the decorations in the diner as it gives off a very retro vibe what with the vintage TV and vinyl records on display. I only have this one complaint that I wish could be better at Butter is Better. Looking retro is fine but I think the diner probably needs some maintenance soon. I don’t even know if this is done on purpose but when we took our seats at the corner, I was so scared that tiny roaches would appear near me. I had some bad experiences in Thailand before so it has scarred me. ٩(× ×)۶

Other than that, I actually think the food at Butter is Better was not bad. My favourite was definitely the corned beef sandwich. It looks so simple but tastes so yummy. Anyway, as expected, there was too much food so we ended up asking the staff to pack them up for us to bring back to our condo. Haha! If you are tired of Thai cuisine and are within the vicinity, I would recommend dropping by Butter is Better to try the affordable American-style diner dishes.

  1. Katherine you ended your story alluding to the possibility that because you saw a cock roach at another establishment that you were afraid you might see one at Butter is Better? I live at The Astra 6 months out of the year and have dined at Butter is Better dozens of times. I have yet to see a cock roach or any other unwelcome critters. I am not sure why you might speculate on this because I have never seen this establishment in the least bit scrunggy or dirty. You owe the diner an apology. Also as you should know hash brown potatoes in the US very from region to region. Because you might be used to eating another style you should not disparage their style. As good as there fried potatoes are I switched to only ordering their hash browns because they are so delicious. Overall I found your comments to be extremely condescending and suggest you find another avocation because blogging is definitely not a good fit for you.

    1. Hi Jon,

Thanks for sharing with me your thoughts and taking time out to comment on my blog post. I am just sharing my thoughts and vibes about dining at Butter is Better. I think everyone has their own take on their thoughts and vibes of a restaurant and that is just how I feel. If you have read my post properly, I did say that we enjoy our dining experience at the restaurant and even recommend people give it a visit if they got tired of having Thai food in Chiang Mai.

As for the hash browns, I am just comparing what I have in Singapore vs what we had at Butter is Better. This is just to give my readers, mostly Singaporeans, an idea of what Butter is Better’s version of hash brown is like. Thank you for letting me know that this is similar to the US version. I have never been there hence my knowledge of hashbrowns is really based on what I had where I live.

Once again, I do appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me! 🙂
