Hubs and I are thinking about visiting Vietnam sometime this year. Being someone who doesn’t fancy vegetables, Vietnamese cuisine hardly attracts me. But if we are going to Vietnam, I think we should try to have some authentic ones while in Singapore. This would give us a better comparison when we get there. After some Googling around, we came by Co Hai Banh Mi, a restaurant known to serve authentic Vietnamese cuisine. So come along with me as I share with you our dining experience at this lovely little restaurant in the heart of Singapore! (´• ω •`)ノ

Why Co Hai Banh Mi

Hubs and I were going to give our prayers at the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho temple located in Bugis. Since both of us are homebodies, we always make sure to try out new things while we are out. It just happened that we were looking around for authentic Vietnamese restaurants to try and Co Hai Banh Mi is just located on the outskirts of Bugis. So we decided to check out the restaurant after our temple visit.

A Vibrant Restaurant Located in the Heart of Singapore

After walking some distance from the temple, we finally reached Co Hai Banh Mi, which is located in a shophouse. The cooking and preparation station is located on Level 1, with some outdoor seats along the walkway. There are a lot more seats on Level 2 and that was where we were headed to. Once up there, we were greeted by a lady who told us that we could take any available table. Interestingly, she was speaking to us in Mandarin! w(°o°)w

Based on reviews, the restaurant is known to be crowded during meal times hence hubs and I made sure that we arrive after the lunch hour. Two tables were finishing their meal when we reached and after a short while, it was just the two of us in the main hall. Ordering is done at the counter on Level 2 and once that was done, hubs and I had some time to take in the view of the restaurant while it was empty.

I am so loving the whole vibe of the restaurant through its decorations, especially the Tiffany blue tables and walls. There are also a lot of positive signs on the walls. Everything is just a vibe here at Co Hai Banh Mi. Besides the main hall, where we were seated, we spotted a little nook located just to the left of the ordering counter. That area looks darker and cosier. But considering that we would be taking photos and videos, sitting outside was the better choice for us to enjoy the natural light coming in from the windows. Review of Our Food at Co Hai Banh Mi

There are so many items on the menu and it could be tough to decide what to eat. But we have already done our homework before coming to the restaurant and decided to order the Banh Mi with Stir-fried Beef & Onion as well as the Vermicelli with BBQ Pork. We have seen a lot of YouTubers mention how amazing Vietnamese coffee is. So on such a hot day, we decided to order the Ice Coffee with Condensed Milk and Fresh Milk. Just to let you in on a little secret. Both hubs and I have NEVER eaten banh mi before! So yes, this is our first time having it and we were kind of excited, not gonna lie. (´• ω •`)

Getting WOW-ed by the Banh Mi

As mentioned, it was hubs and my first time having banh mi and we were really looking forward to having it here at Co Hai Banh Mi. We were having a dilemma about which version of the banh mi to order since there were a few variations. In the end, we decided to go with the beef version. The beef tasted like the beef used in Philly cheesesteaks, which was slightly sweet. I love the pairing of the beef with the coriander. You never read it wrongly. I don’t like vegetables but I LOVE my corianders. It is weird but it’s true. Haha! The baguette was also nice and soft. Everything just goes so well together in that one bite of the banh mi.

I am someone who doesn’t really like having sweet sauce on my food so I personally would prefer to have more saltiness to the beef. But hubs love the banh mi A LOT so it is really a personal preference here. All thanks to the coriander, I did end up finishing the banh mi though. (o´▽`o)

Vermicelli with BBQ Pork Could be Better

it is not my first time having Vietnamese vermicelli with BBQ pork. The last time good one I had was at International Plaza. My colleagues recommended this Vietnamese eatery to me on my first day at work and I instantly fall in love with it. Their BBQ pork was nicely grilled to just the right crisp/charredness. But sadly, the eatery has since closed after COVID-19. Since then, I have been searching for a place that made this dish well. (´-ω-`)

I tried the version from So Pho and it was kind of disappointing. And since then, I have stopped. But since Co Hai Banh Mi is known for serving authentic Vietnamese food, I thought that I could not miss out on the chance to have it here. The pork was nicely roasted and was really flavourful. But it still kind of pales in comparison to the one at International Plaza, in my personal opinion. It was really delicious but just did not have enough charredness to it. Overall, the dish was still great if you have not tried it before.

The dish also came with a fried spring roll, which was delish as well. But once again, in comparison, I felt that it kind of loses out to the one at International Plaza AND So Pho. I can snack on So Pho’s Imperial Spring Rolls all day long. If you have not tried it, you should probably go get it. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

A Coffee I Wish to Have Every Day

I was prepared to be blown away by the coffee but I was NOT PREPARED to be SO BLOWN AWAY. The coffee was AMAZING. The coffee tasted like it was roasted and it was not too sweet. There is just something about the coffee that tasted SO GOOD. The balance between the slight bitterness of the roasted coffee and the condensed milk was done so well that I could literally have this EVERY DAY. It was THAT GOOD. \(★ω★)/

Overall Experience

All in all, I think hubs and I enjoyed the food at Co Hai Banh Mi. Since it was our first time having banh mi, there is only so much I can comment on. But for our first experience, it was actually really not too bad. And I am sure the banh mi in Vietnam would be so much better so that is something that we are definitely looking forward to in our trip. Also, I am wishing that they have coffee like what we had here at Co Hai Banh Mi ‘cos it was DA BOMB. I can’t wait to see what we would find in Vietnam! (*♡∀♡)

We would be visiting Hoi An and Da Nang in July so if you have any places that we should visit, let me know in the comments so we can check them out! Thank you~! (´ ε ` )♡
