The Capitol Kempinski Hotel is a hotel I have been avoiding. But a hotel that has its own charm that attracts us to it for our latest staycation. Let’s find out why I have been avoiding it and if staying at the Deluxe Room at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel is really worth it. (´• ω •`) ♡

Why The Capitol Kempinski Hotel?

My birthday was coming and it was meant to be just a weekend spent at home. But… I decided at the very last minute that MAYBE we could do a staycation instead. And babe gave me the look ‘cos… It was really last minute that a lot of hotels are not even accepting bookings for that date anymore. (/▿\ )

So anyway, babe said no promises that we will get a good deal so we looked through all the major booking platforms. We decided to go with the deluxe room at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel as it is one of the few hotels in Singapore that has a bathtub in the hotel room (also ‘cos we wanted to use our bath bomb ┐(‘~` )┌).

Another reason is that The Capitol Kempinski Hotel actually has quite some good reviews from many online (been avoiding this hotel also because of my history with Capitol). And that’s how we decided on The Capitol Kempinski Hotel and booked ourselves a room only three days before my birthday!

The Capitol Kempinski Hotel, Luxury in a Restored Building

Location and Accessibility

The Capitol Kempinski Hotel is located just opposite the Raffles City Shopping Centre, and with The Capitol Singapore being the connection, there is a sheltered route from the City Hall MRT station to the hotel. Once known as the Capitol Building and Stamford House, The Capitol Kempinski Hotel opened in late 2018 after years of restoration work and updates. A lot of older Singaporeans would have memories of this place. When I used to work at The Capitol Theatre, I would have clients/guests telling me their memories of the theatre and how happy they were to step into the theatre again. ( ´ ▽ ` )

The direct connection to the hotel lobby is via the Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski. Alternatively, you could also take a more sheltered route through the MRT station. Something to note is that the dropoff point is rather hidden so do check out the directions on their website if you’re driving!

Staycation Package

Our package includes:

  • 1-night accommodation at Deluxe Room with The Capitol Kempinski Hotel
  • Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages in the minibar (replenished daily)

As mentioned, we booked this staycation really last minute so we did not get the room with breakfast. And since we are conveniently located within the city centre, we know there are a lot of breakfast options in the morning. So yep, still okay, though I would have wished to experience the dining experience at 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung. I have been there but never really tried anything there. The bar and dining area are BEAUTIFUL. ( ◕▿◕ )

Check-In Process

Seems like a few couples were checking in/out at that time so we had to wait a short while before someone attended to us. The whole process was fuss-free and we also managed to get a one-hour later check-out timing (upon request only).

After the check-in was done, the lady staff brought us up to our room, something that we usually only experienced overseas when we stayed at resorts. It was nice but it was also odd because we were expecting the staff to introduce the room elements to us, like what the resort staff did overseas. But erm… She really, literally, just brought us to our room, showed us into our room and wished us a nice stay. (・・ ) ? Well… As I say, it was a nice touch but we just thought it was a bit odd. Or maybe we are the ones being odd. ( ˙▿˙ )

So anyway, awkwardness over. Onwards to the room tour! ٩(◕‿◕。)۶

Deluxe Room Tour of The Capitol Kempinski Hotel

Since The Capitol Kempinski Hotel is located in a restored building, the hotel space isn’t super big, as can be seen in the lobby area. There are also only three levels to the building.

Our Deluxe Room at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel was located on Level 2. I initially thought that the Deluxe Room was the most basic room in the hotel hence when I entered the room, I was surprised by the room size. When I was working at The Capitol Theatre, I had the chance to visit the hotel when it opened, since the hotel was our sister brand. So the Deluxe Room was actually the room that was being shown to me during our visit and I thought it was SO BEAUTIFUL. I didn’t expect myself to be staying in THAT room but yes, we did. (o´▽`o)

Our Deluxe Room was located just beside the main road, so you might think it would be noisy, but The Capitol Kempinski Hotel did a good job with the soundproofing. If you are by the window, you might hear a very very very dull traffic sound coming from the road but other than that, it has been nice and quiet during our stay.

Sofa Seating Area

As you would have expected from a restored and updated building of culture, the room exudes luxury and heritage all in one. Once you enter the room, you will be greeted by the size of the room and how grand it looks.

Most hotel rooms will try to fit in a seating area. With its room size, the deluxe room also has a sofa seating area. But it wasn’t just a normal seating area. The cushion on the sofa was SUPER COMFORTABLE. I swear I have never come by such a comfortable seating area in a hotel room before. I could literally hang out and sleep there if I wanted to. (´ ω `♡)

The Hidden Vanity Mirror

This was the best surprise in the room. If it wasn’t for my itchy hands, I might not even spot it. (⁀ᗢ⁀) At the table below the TV comes a hidden surprise, a hidden vanity mirror, that is also used to keep the hair dryer~! It was so cool I have to do a video just for it. Haha!

I also have to mention that the keycard for The Capitol Kempinski Hotel comes in a cute square shape! Not sure what is the reason for doing so but it’s so cute, I swear it could be a souvenir of sorts since the front is that of the hotel and the back has its name. (*♡∀♡)

Welcome to the Luxurious Bathroom~

Big Bathtub for Bubble Bath!

The bathroom was big and nice, with a super spacious bathtub that could fit both of us comfortably. We didn’t notice it earlier but one side of the bathtub was peeling at the side, i.e. the white part is coming off. It’s nothing big but just odd to see this in a luxury hotel, even though wear and tear are common but never expected it from a bathtub. (*/ω\)

Located at one end of the bathtub, is something that looks like a mirror but… It’s actually a TV! Surprise surprise! I mean I already know it was a TV so I tested it out. Babe was wondering about the noise from the bathroom and I told him about the TV, which he was surprised as he didn’t know it. Σ(°ロ°) I have to say the TV was done perfectly to fit into the theme. Also, the TV works perfectly with the sound and image. Something that some hotels can’t get right. |・ω・)

This Shower Head or That Shower Head?

The shower area has… Many showerheads. It has a rain shower, a higher shower head and a lower movable shower head. I really don’t know how to describe it to you and if you don’t understand, please refer to the photo. (*/ω\)

Everyone loves a good rain shower and we always welcome a good rain shower that feels like rain is falling on you (but we don’t really want the rain to fall on us so… ヽ(´ー` )┌). Anyway, the rain shower head we had was not as great as we wanted it to be. Some of the nozzles seemed to be blocked, causing some water to do a spraying effect instead of a smooth rainy effect. So, this is something that could be better and it’s time to clean all the showerheads~! On the other hand, the higher shower head was actually very comfortable so if your rain shower is not as great, try the other one as a good alternative~!

The lower shower head is actually movable, as in you can take it out to try to shower with it. Probably good for kids or if you feel like sitting on the marble seat in the shower area. Or like me, had a full face of makeup and only want to bathe your body ‘cos you want to go out again later? (*/▽\*)

The Awkward Door

The toilet has its own cubicle and door. We usually leave the toilet door open and this is the only time that I need to complain about A DOOR. This is the most awkward door ever. You cannot leave the door open and use the toilet at the same time. Don’t tell me that I can close the door before using the toilet ‘cos I have never had this problem elsewhere. (・`ω´・) I wonder why couldn’t they mount the door on the other side though. That could have solved the problem. Or probably we are odd again. ┐(‘~`;)┌

The Mystery Behind the Glass Panels

As we were walking to our room, we passed by an opening from which we could look down and into the restaurant, aka 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung. And when we were going out after we checked in, I realised something odd. Why can’t I look into the restaurant? Was it just an illusion earlier?

And then I realised… The glass panel could open and close! I am gonna assume it opens during dining hours and closes after that, because we saw it the next morning when people were having breakfast. Like so cool! (*♡∀♡)

A Pool Without a View

The pool is located at level three and seems to be at another building as we had to walk through a long walkway to reach it. The long walkway consists of rooms, which I believe might be the Classic Rooms. If you’re staying at a Deluxe Room like ours at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel and have no plans to visit the pool or gym, PLEASE still make a visit to this walkway. The special tunnelling effect from the lighting and design makes the walkway feel like you are walking through a time tunnel. (*♡∀♡)

If I never remember wrongly, some of the hotel rooms of The Capitol Kempinski Hotel can look out into the Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski. Probably because it’s a restored building, there wasn’t much space for a pool, hence it was built at a place without a view. But they did compensate with a lush green plant wall, which works as a nice photo-taking backdrop as well.

Anyway, the pool was rather small. As always during this period, reservations have to be made before accessing the swimming pool. The usual TraceTogether check-in is needed and once done, we were given our pool towels. Another two families of four were at the pool when we got there. We had waited for one family to go before entering the pool ‘cos it felt like a pool for eight pax at max to enjoy. (T_T)

A special feature of the pool was the jacuzzi-like bubbling/massage that you usually have in a jacuzzi pool. it stopped after a while and we didn’t know where to find the controls to have it again. Haha! Oh well~

Other Things Worth Mentioning

Lack of In-Room USB Ports

I would think that new hotels these days will come with USB ports just beside the bed. I see this as a norm as guests nowadays prefer to charge their devices using USB ports before they sleep. Interestingly, USB ports are only found on the digital clock, which makes phone charging a bit awkward.

Happy Birthday to ME!

A birthday cake was in the room once we checked in. Apparently, babe had mentioned to the hotel staff via email about my birthday. (*/ω\) It was really nice of the hotel to have the birthday cake there on our arrival but I, unfortunately, have to do a comparison with the experience I had with Andaz Singapore last year.

I did not mention it to them my birthday. I did the check-in for us and the hotel staff wished me a Happy Birthday during then since she had my ID for the check-in process. The hotel went above and beyond. One of the hotel staff came to our room with a handwritten card and some small gifts for my birthday.

In comparison, the lady doing our check-in did not wish me a Happy Birthday even though she had my ID as well. Maybe The Capitol Kempinski Hotel could look into bringing their experience up to another notch. (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

In-Room Dining

Well, as I mentioned, we didn’t get a chance to try the food at 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung so we decided to at least try ONE dish from the kitchen. Since we were still full from our superb breakfast from Tiong Bahru Bakery, we decided to go with the Singapore Laksa.

When arrived, the laksa gravy was in a pitcher, of which the staff had helped me pour the gravy into the bowl. Extra chilli was given at the side, in case you want to adjust the spiciness to your preference. It comes with two big prawns, an egg, some tau pok (tofu puffs) and a thick bee hoon. Verdict? Since it came with two big fresh prawns and it is a luxury hotel, it definitely comes with a price tag. Taste-wise, it’s okay but nothing to shout about tho. So yep, that’s that! Probably their breakfast is better? ┐(‘~`;)┌

Overall Experience

Even though I have mentioned some hits and misses in my post, to be honest, I actually enjoyed my stay at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel. Just the Deluxe Room experience itself is already amazing. The pool might be small for a wholesome experience when it is crowded but if we had gone at a better time, it might be better (we are just weird people who prefer to be alone). And once again, DO NOT MISS OUT ON THE TUNNELLING WALKWAY. (´。• ᵕ •。`)

There are a lot of little surprises here and there that you can’t help being amazed at this hotel. For a similar price point, unfortunately, it seems like Andaz Singapore is still unbeatable for me, in terms of the overall experience being even more topnotch. However, it’s safe to say that The Capitol Kempinski Hotel has been added to my recommended list of hotels to stay in Singapore for now, together with Andaz Singapore and The Clan Hotel. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)
