After having too much Western breakfast, it is time for us to seek out a more local breakfast option in Kuala Lumpur! So we opened up our Google Maps and found this restaurant called Kam Fatt Restaurant (甘發茶樓) at Jalan Alor. Let’s find out what it has to offer together~! (´• ω •`)ノ

Why We Choose Kam Fatt Restaurant

Have you been to a country and left it to chance to find a place with good food, or are you someone who loves to do in-depth research before visiting them? Hubs and I are mainly the latter. But sometimes, in a country like Malaysia, we tend not to do much research since we can always come back here with ease. So, for this trip to Kuala Lumpur, we left space for some free and easy.

After trying out the two lovely cafes beside our apartment at Swiss Garden Residences, we wanted something more local for our breakfast. That’s why hubs and I decided to see what else we could find in or near Jalan Alor. The best way of doing this is by opening up our Google Maps to see what restaurants are good for breakfast in the area. Since many of them are only open at night, it wasn’t easy to find breakfast here. But we eventually spotted this place called Kam Fatt Restaurant. Reviews are generally quite good, so we decided to try this restaurant. ( ´ ω ` )

What We Ordered at Kam Fatt Restaurant

Hubs and I got there before 9 AM, and Kam Fatt Restaurant was already bustling with people. We were greeted at the entrance by a lovely uncle who welcomed us into the restaurant and got us a table. We must have looked like tourists or something as he was giving us recommendations on what was popular in the restaurant. Haha! He was really friendly and couldn’t wait to take our order. (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

We ended up ordering its signature Curry Laksa, Kaya Butter Toast and two cups of Kopi Milo (cold and hot). While waiting for our dishes to arrive, people kept streaming into the restaurant. Having a 2nd floor seemed to be common for restaurants and cafes in this area as customers were being guided upstairs by the staff.

Kopi Milo and Kaya Butter Toast

Hubs and I tried Kopi Milo at Malayan Garden, a restaurant on Petaling Street, and we were expecting it to be similar to that. Sadly, it didn’t taste as amazing as the one we had. In case you don’t know what is kopi milo, it is just a mix of coffee (kopi) and Milo. I had the hot one, and it tasted kind of sweet, with the taste of milo being more overpowering. Hubs drank the cold version, and it tasted better. The milo was more like a dark chocolate in his drink and was less sweet. We were both hoping to taste the bitterness of the kopi, but what we had was more like a chocolatey drink instead. (-ω-、)

When it comes to Kaya Butter Toast, the only comparison we can make is with Ya Kun Kaya Toast. The toast here at Kam Fatt Restaurant is more of what you can find in those old-school restaurants. The toast is thicker as compared to Ya Kun’s. I find that there is not enough kaya and butter on the toast. Ya Kun’s is definitely more generous in its amount. Overall, still a good dish if this is your first time trying kaya butter toast. But for us, we still prefer Ya Kun. („• ᴗ •„)

Flavourful and Spicy Signature Curry Laksa

The uncle was telling us the difference between all the versions of the Curry Laksa: Mini, Signature and Golden. We got the Signature one, which is a regular bowl for laksa. The Golden version has more ingredients than the regular one, while the Mini version is just a smaller portion.

The curry laksa was full of umami and was rather spicy, even before adding in any chilli sauce. Hubs and I both love it a lot! It was just at the right spice level for us. The laksa also came with some chicken, which was really soft and tender. The only complaint I had was that the chicken had bones in them. (´-ω-`) It would be better if we could just have the meat, but that is just me being picky now. Hehe. Besides the chicken, there are also other ingredients, such as cockles and tofu puffs (tau pok).

Overall, this was an absolutely delicious dish. But for those who can’t really take spicy food, you might want to reconsider ordering this dish. Unless they have a way to adjust the spiciness, be prepared with a cold drink to get over the spice! ⸜( ´ ꒳ ` )⸝

Overall Experience at Kam Fatt Restaurant

Since there is air-conditioning in Kam Fatt Restaurant, it makes dining there really comfortable, away from the sweltering heat outside. We were happy to try this place out and highly recommend the Curry Laksa! The dish definitely lives up to its name as a signature dish. Also, note that this place only opens for breakfast and lunch, so do drop by early if you want to try their food! (@´ー`)ノ゙
