Why We Visit Massimo Italian Restaurant in Sanur

We were spoilt for choices while looking for restaurants to visit during our short stay in Sanur. And it sure was a headache trying to eat at as many places as possible within a short period. Not wanting to miss out on good restaurants here, we checked out some blogs to see where they recommend. And of all those that we have read, Massimo Italian Restaurant is always mentioned. A quick check on Google shows that it has over 12,000 reviews! With all the positive reviews, we are definitely going to check it out to see if it is that good!

Visiting the Restaurant for a Late Lunch

As with all places, hubs and I always made sure to visit them during off-peak hours to avoid the crowd. It is not easy to miss Massimo Italian Restaurant when walking down Jl. Danau Tamblingan. Once we spotted a long queue, we knew we had reached the restaurant. To be honest, when I first saw the queue, I nearly thought they were all waiting to go into the restaurant. I was like, at this hour!? But luckily, they were all queuing for gelato. Phew. In comparison to the long line outside, the restaurant was relatively quiet. There were only two other tables of diners when we arrived.

What We Ordered at Massimo Italian Restaurant

After making our order, a complimentary starter was served. It looked like some fried dough ball, and once again, we forgot to ask them what it was. Haha! It was so good that I couldn’t stop munching on them. I had to remind myself that we had a lot to eat and to control my fingers and mouth! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Drinks and Appetiser to Start

For drinks, we ordered Iced Biscof Coffee and Lemon Squash. We wanted a slight twist to our coffee and thought biscof would make the coffee taste slightly different. Well, it was pretty average. The coffee was relatively mild, and the drink was not cold enough. Maybe it would have tasted better if it was much colder. ┐(‘~`;)┌ The Lemon Squash, on the other hand, was a really refreshing drink! Its taste reminded us of ENO in lemon flavour. IYKYK. Haha! This drink was a godsend to help us clear our palate from our heavy meal. (´• ω •`)

The Iced Biscof Coffee, Lemon Squash and fried calamari we ordered

To kickstart our meal, we decided to get the Calamaretti Fritti E Salsa Aioli or fried calamari. Now that I am blogging about it, I realised the description said fried baby squid. We must have missed that while ordering, as when the dish was served, we were like oh, these squids are cut really small, eh! (´・ᴗ・ ` ) Anyway, the fried calamari was fried to a nice crispiness and went really well with the two given dips.

Pizza with a Generous Amount of Ingredients!

Finally, our main dishes are served! First up, we had our pizza! We decided to go for something safe and ordered a Cotto E Funghi for its mushrooms and ham. Boy, were we surprised to see such a BIG pizza with a generous amount of ingredients served to our table! Hubs and I were like, that’s huge. (@_@)

Interestingly, the pizza was relatively thin. Don’t get me wrong, hubs and I love thin pizza. But in this instance, we think the pizza was a bit too thin. The ratio of dough to ingredients was not enough. Haha! That said, if we had more dough, it would still be overkill for us as the pizza was quite big. And we still had another main dish to eat! It’s Finally Time for the Highlight of our Meal!

It is time to talk about the highlight of our meal – Spaghetti Alla Carbonara! Initially, I wanted to have aglio olio as I thought most Italian restaurants would have it. But oddly, they don’t serve it here at Massimo Italian Restaurant. Slightly disappointed, we went with the next best alternative: carbonara. Hubs and I usually don’t order carbonara as we find it too creamy to finish. But since we saw people raving about the restaurant’s carbonara in the reviews, we thought we’d try it. Boy, were we glad that we did it! (´• ω •`)

When the carbonara was served, it looked so different from what we expected. No creamy sauce in sight! And it looked so beautiful on the plate. Before we dug into it, the staff asked if we wanted cheese on the carbonara. I mean, how can you reject cheese on pasta right?! And she took out a cheese and started shredding LOADS of cheese on the carbonara. It looked like we just had cheese snowed on our carbonara, and we were here for it. (★ω★)

The carbonara and the cannoli we had at the restaurant

And it was finally time for us to dig in! And boy, oh boy, it was AMAZING! I am terrible at describing it, but the carbonara doesn’t have the weird, creamy taste we always had at regular restaurants. I don’t know how to say it, but it was ABSOLUTELY delicious. And once we started, we couldn’t stop, so much so that we neglected the pizza. LOL. Honestly, I was glad there was no aglio olio on the menu. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have tried this amazing carbonara! ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝

Trying Something New for Dessert

Having watched many episodes of Cake Boss in the past on Food Network, I was intrigued to try the Cannoli Siciliana when I saw it on the menu! So, besides having gelato, we also got ourselves one cannoli. I was expecting the shell to be hard, so we were a bit surprised that it was so soft! The cannoli came with chocolate fillings, and it felt like we were eating a thick chocolate bar. It is a simple and nice dessert you can only find in an authentic Italian restaurant, so you must try it! (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

Gelato is a MUST at Massimo Italian Restaurant!

After the fantastic carbonara, we thought that nothing could top it since we were nearing the end of our meal. And we were wrong as the gelato here at Massimo Italian Restaurant was DA BOMB! Lucky for us, we could sit here and make our order instead of queuing outside. (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

They had over 60 flavours on the menu, so it took us a while to decide. But eventually, we each chose two flavours: Colada, Pistachio, Espresso and Snickers. You would expect gelato places to only have a few signature flavours that taste good. But at Massimo Italian Restaurant, they were able to make all the flavours taste amazing. I don’t know how they did it, but they did, and I am missing its gelato now. (´-ω-`)

Reviewing the Gelato Flavours that We Chose

I chose Colada as Pina Colada is my favourite mocktail! When I spotted it on the menu, I was so excited to try it! And oh my, I love it so much! It was like having Pina Colada in its frozen creamy form. (ᵔ◡ᵔ) Pistachio was the other flavour I chose. Most places had only a very mild taste of pistachio. It’s either that or it just tastes super artificial. But the one here at Massimo Italian Restaurant was intense! It almost felt like I was having a mouthful of pistachio. (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

Hubs chose Espresso and Snickers, with the latter being the safest choice in case we didn’t like all the others. Haha! We were expecting Espresso to taste like coffee. But we didn’t expect it to come with a slight hint of bitterness. We absolutely loved it. As I said, the Snickers was a safe choice, and if you have a sweet tooth and love Snickers, this is the one to have! (´• ω •`)ノ Man, I wish I had a tub of each flavour right now. (ノД`)

Overall Experience at Massimo Italian Restaurant

Our meal at Massimo Italian Restaurant has got to be one of the best meals in Bali. The staff and service were excellent. Most of the food we ordered was also exceptional. And not forgetting the fantastic gelatos! I will never forget the thick, creamy, intense gelato flavours we have tried here.

So, be it hot or cool weather, if you are staying in Sanur, make sure you visit Massimo Italian Restaurant for its gelato! Although I do recommend dining here for some authentic Italian food. But a quick warning: once you dine here, you can’t return to the regular Italian food anymore! Haha! ⸜( *ˊᵕˋ* )⸝
