O.BBa BBQ is hands down one of the top picks when it comes to Korean BBQ restaurants. After our initial attempt to dine there did not work out as expected, we decided to give it another shot again. If you are curious to know if it really lives up to its hype, stick around as I share my experience of dining at this bustling restaurant! ⸜( *ˊᵕˋ* )⸝

Why We Chose O.BBa BBQ

I have always heard people talking about O.BBa BBQ. It is probably one of the most talked about restaurants when it comes to Korean BBQ. Since hubs and my workplace are within the vicinity, we decided to check it out after work. We thought we would be early since it only took us less than 10 minutes to walk there. When we reached at around 6.15 PM, we were surprised to see the long queue outside the restaurant! Σ(O_O)

Hubs and I didn’t want to wait too long so we decided to go somewhere else instead. With this failed attempt, we decided to try our luck again when we were having a staycation at Oasia Hotel Downtown. Since we were just nearby, we thought we could take our time to walk there, considering that 30 minutes before the restaurant opened would be safe enough. Well, apparently it was not as ideal as we thought it would be!

By the time we got there, a queue had already formed outside the restaurant, yet again! I totally did not expect O.BBa BBQ to be THIS popular. Since it is so popular, it does not take reservations. The only thing you can do is queue if you want to have a meal there. (´・ᴗ・ ` ) Luckily we were the 4th couple in the queue so at least we were guaranteed the first seating! Phew. ٩(。•́‿•̀。)۶

What We Ordered at O.BBa BBQ

We were given a seat near the entrance, which is quite a cosy corner to dine in. That being said, hubs and I were constantly aware of the queue outside the restaurant since our backs were facing the glass. Haha! It is not a stressful dining session but just less comfortable with people possibly watching you eating through the glass. (*/ω\)

Having Makgeolli in a Bowl for the First Time!

I love makgeolli. But since I get drunk easily, I try not to drink alcohol while dining outside. But since we were staying nearby, I told hubs that I wanted to drink makgeolli for this meal. ( ´ ꒳ ` ) A huge container as well as two small bowls were brought to our table. The staff then poured makgeolli into the container. The way to drink it is to scoop it out of the container and put it into our bowls. The idea is similar to how you would scoop out soup to put into individual bowls. I thought this was an interesting way to enjoy alcohol. And to be honest, it was good! ( ´ ω ` )

Good Quality Pork Belly Meat

The 3cm Sliced Pork Belly is one of the must-order items on O.BBa BBQ’s menu. And that was exactly what we had~! Interestingly, there is no minimum number of portions of meat you need to order if you order from the ala carte BBQ menu. In most restaurants, you would need to order at least 2 portions of meat. The former is better as you can actually enjoy other food besides grilled meat! Most times due to the portion requirement, hubs and I could hardly order anything else. (´-ω-`)

Service was great and rather prompt even though the restaurant was full. The staff also helped to cook our meat to perfection on the grill. I love how the sliced pork belly was served in style~! There is the O.BBa BBQ branding on the mushroom and everything was served on a wooden board. Like how a cheese board is being presented! Anyway, the pork belly was fantastic. It came out really nice and tender, a quality that is so much better than a lot of Korean BBQ restaurants we have been to. (´• ω •`)ノ

Delish Seafood Pancake, Side Dishes and Ice Cream

As mentioned, hubs and I always find it tough to order any other food whenever we have grilled meat at a Korean BBQ restaurant. Our bellies are just not big enough to hold too much food. Haha! So this day at O.BBa BBQ, we attempted to order a Seafood Green Onion Pancake and it was SO GOOD. But unfortunately, we were really too full from having the grilled meat and the portion was so big so we ended up not finishing it. (*/ω\)

The side dishes and seafood pancake at O.BBa BBQ

We usually don’t eat a lot of the side dishes so having six side dishes was sufficient in variety for us, though the taste was average at best. I would say the best thing about O.BBa BBQ is definitely the meat. If you are craving some after-meal dessert, O.BBa BBQ also has free ice cream for your enjoyment after your meal. Each of us can take a pick of our preferred flavour from the fridge near the exit. During our visit, the staff told us that we could not have the ice cream at our table but to only have it after we left the restaurant. I don’t know if this is still in practice but because of that, hubs and I chose not to have it. ヽ(´ー` )┌

Did O.BBa BBQ Live Up to Its Expectations?

For me, it is a resounding yes! Korean BBQ is all about the meat so the quality of the meat always comes first over everything else. Even though the side dishes were average the seafood pancake was really good. And obviously, the pork belly that we had was off the charts too. So I think O.BBa BBQ has lived up to its expectations. But if you ask me if it is worth it to queue hours for it, I am going to say no. I will NEVER queue for hours for food so this is just me. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

One important thing to note is that there is a 90-minute dining limit so better take this into consideration as well! If you want to queue for hours, better to come by at least 30 minutes before it opens so you can get in once it opens! (✧ω✧)

BONUS: Dining at O.BBa Jjajang

O.BBa has a total of three outlets at Tanjong Pagar, namely O.BBa BBQ, O.BBa BBQ & Jjajang and O.BBa Jjajang. To my understanding, O.BBa Jjajang is the only one that does not serve grilled meat so do not go to the wrong one! O.BBa Jjajang is known for its Jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) and that was what hubs and I went to try on our off day! We ordered Tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), Jjajangmyeon and Jjampong (spicy seafood noodles).

What We Ate at O.BBa Jjajang

You know how Koreans always love to have a lot of vegetables in their food? Well, that’s the problem as I don’t really like too much vegetables. (*/ω\) The jjampong was flavourful. Not only was there a lot of vegetables, but there was also a lot of seafood ingredients in it. I thought it was okay because there were too many vegetables for my liking. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

After watching so many Korean variety shows and seeing how celebrities always enjoy tangsuyuk, I decided to give it a try. If I never remember wrongly, you have the option to have the sauce served separately so you dip into it instead. I wanted to eat it with the sauce on the meat for a better comparison to what we have at Chinese restaurants. In comparison to Chinese restaurants, the sauce is more watery and less sticky. It also tasted slightly sweeter and less savoury. The meat itself is tender but I still prefer the crispiness with the sauce coated on it from Chinese restaurants. ( ´ ω ` )

The jjajangmyeon, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and jjampong (spicy seafood noodles) at O.BBa Jjajang

And lastly, it is time for the popular dish, jjajangmyeon! I don’t know how to describe the taste but I think it tasted slightly bitter with a lot of pieces of onion mixed in the sauce. I don’t know man, this is really a personal preference and I totally have no love for this dish. Even hubs also think it was just okay for him. Haha! There are a lot of positive reviews for O.BBa Jjajang so you never know, you might love it better than I do! (´• ω •`)
