Hubs and I were having a staycation at the Carlton Hotel in City Hall. One of the things that we always do while on a staycation is to look for a BBQ restaurant to have a meal. And that was when we came by SSAK3 Bras Basah. If you are looking for an affordable Korean BBQ restaurant in town, you have come to the right post! So sit back as I share my experience dining at this wallet-friendly Korean BBQ restaurant! (@´ー`)ノ゙

Why We Chose SSAK3 Bras Basah

Since we were staying at the Carlton Hotel, the obvious choice for us was to visit Bras Basah Complex. The building is just a 2-minute walk from the hotel and we know there is a Korean BBQ restaurant since we have been there before. But when we got there, instead of Ssikkek, the restaurant had been changed to SSAK3 Bras Basah instead. (O.O)

I kid you not when hubs and I started walking around the area to make sure we didn’t miss out on Ssikkek. Haha! (*/ω\) Luckily it was not a wasted trip since SSAK3 Bras Basah is also a Korean BBQ restaurant. Anyway, in case you are wondering, I don’t think SSAK3 is related to the South Korean group SSAK3. I did not ask the staff about it but probably someone was inspired by the name and decided to call it the same name. Haha!

What We Ordered at the Restaurant

We came by the restaurant on a weekend afternoon for lunch. Interestingly, there wasn’t a crowd and even if there were customers subsequently, the restaurant was never full. I guess it was good for us as we enjoyed our meal in peace. ( ´ ω ` )

Hubs and I decided to go with the SSAK3 Assorted Set as well as the SSAK3 pancake. That was obviously a silly thing to do since we usually can’t eat that much. Haha! Even at such an affordable price, the staff here would still help you to grill your meat. But we decided to grill the meat ourselves, for a reason which I will mention below. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

The SSAK3 pancake, meat and side dishes that we had at SSAK3 Bras Brasah Korean BBQ restaurant

The meat was average at best. Hubs and I were not expecting a lot from it since it was rather affordable. The pancake on the other hand was totally not worth ordering at all. I prefer my pancake slightly more crispy but these were so meh with slightly average taste. (´-ω-`)

Things Worth Mentioning about SSAK3 Bras Basah

Not an Ideal BBQ Setup

I don’t like the pan used here at SSAK3 Bras Basah. Unlike a lot of Korean BBQ restaurants where they had the grill in a cutout hole in the table, the grill used here is a portable one. So instead of covering the grill if you are not having Korean BBQ, they would bring out the grill pan instead. A separate bowl is given to hold the oil that came out from the grilled meat. It is almost like you are having a BBQ session at home with your own grill pan. (*/ω\)

Besides that, there is no exhaust pipe so you would be guaranteed to smell like grilled meat when you walk out of the restaurant. That is still okay since the smell would go off after walking around. The worst part is having the oil splattering around when the meat is being grilled. Landing on the table is fine but having the hot oil hitting your hand is no fun. And this has nothing to do with us grilling the meat ourselves because the same thing happened when the staff was doing it. (ノД`) We decided to grill the meat ourselves so we could try to control the amount of oil splattering around, which didn’t work very well. (× ×)۶

Unique Way of Getting a Drink

One thing unique about SSAK3 Bras Basah is the way that you can get drinks for your meal. Instead of ordering from the staff, you simply buy from the vending machine in the restaurant! I think it is a rather cool idea as you can get your drinks as and when you want. If you don’t have coins with you, you can always exchange them with the staff. Considering most of us are going cashless these days, the restaurant might want to change the payment system in future. Hehe. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Anyway, this is also where I first tried sikhye. I saw the drink in a canned form and thought of trying it after seeing Korean celebrities rave about it on variety shows. Well, I can only say it is an acquired taste. I don’t even know if that is how sikhye is supposed to taste. The ginger taste in the drink is just a bit too overwhelming for us. (ノ_ヽ)

Overall Experience at SSAK3 Bras Basah

If you are looking for an affordable place to have a Korean BBQ, I recommend coming to SSAK3 Bra Basah. But do not expect quality meat or side dishes since everything we have tried was average at best. One thing I did not mention but the restaurant does not provide complimentary water or tea. Some might think that it is a basic for Korean BBQ restaurants so you might want to take that into consideration.

I personally think this place is good for students to gather considering the price point and location. Ssikkek used to attract loads of students in the past so SSAK3 Bra Basah might have the same thing going for them. On days when you do not want to splurge but crave some Korean BBQ, this might be the place to be. If not, you are better off going somewhere else for better meat and food.
