It was hubs’ birthday, and he decided we should have a Korean BBQ on this day! For such a special day, I decided we should spend a bit more than the usual Korean BBQ restaurants we have been to. That’s how we stumbled upon Story One, a premium ala carte Korean BBQ restaurant in Tanjong Pagar. And let me tell you, this was absolutely AMAZING. Whether you are thinking of celebrating a special occasion or just feeling fancy, this place is the one to visit. Imagine top-quality meat cooked to perfection and melting in your mouth. Can’t imagine? Well, I will try my best to share our experience with you through my words and photos then! (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

Why Did We Choose Story One Korean BBQ?

As I mentioned, it was going to be hubs’ birthday. And what better way to celebrate my man’s birthday than with a more luxurious meal together! Even though there are not a lot of premium Korean BBQ restaurants to choose from, it was not an easy decision. After looking through reviews on Google and blogs, it was down to two restaurants to pick from.

After looking through their menu and photos taken by people, hubs ultimately went with Story One at Tanjong Pagar! Not only does it have raving reviews on Google, but it also comes with one of the most unique BBQ setups. With the decision, it was time to make a reservation for a meal at Story One~! ⸜( *ˊᵕˋ* )⸝

Dining During Off-Peak Hours at Story One

A lot of Korean BBQ restaurants have post-lunch hour breaks. Since hubs and I prefer to avoid the lunch hour, we usually try to check out restaurants that have no breaks between opening hours. Luckily, Story One is one of them, so we were able to make a reservation for 3 PM, hoping that we could dine in peace.

And we couldn’t ask for a more peaceful dining experience as there was only one table of diners there when we reached! Haha! It caught me off guard as I had never seen such an empty Korean BBQ restaurant before, even for off-peak hours. (O.O) After we settled in, the other table was just about ready to leave. Not a single diner walked into the restaurant for the remainder of our meal. So yes, I think we got more than we could ask for. Haha! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Excellent Food We Ordered at Story One Korean BBQ

Story One has quite a good variety of food selections on its menu. With the restaurant branding itself for its premium Korean BBQ, it is a MUST to have it here besides the ala carte dishes. In case you didn’t know, Han Woo (한우), a premium Korean beef, is known as the best beef in Korea. (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

But sadly, you can only find Han Woo in Korea. So, based on Story One’s menu, they have offered Japanese Wagyu instead, as it is of similar quality to Korean beef. And that was exactly what we went for! We chose to have the Japanese Kobe Wagyu Strip-Loin. Like many Korean BBQ restaurants, you must order at least two kinds or portions of meat, so we went with the Kurobuta Pork Belly for the second option. Following our little tradition at Korean BBQ restaurants, we also got a bowl of Spicy Buckwheat Noodles or Naengmyeon to go with the meat. ( ´ ω ` )

Good Quantity and Amazing Quality Side Dishes

After we made our order, the side dishes were served to our table. A total of NINE side dishes appeared immediately and filled up our table. Haha! Having been to quite some Korean BBQ restaurants, I can honestly say that Story One puts in effort to ensure that their side dishes stand out from others. Probably more than half of the nine side dishes were new to us, which was amazing.

So far, we have had Hyang Yeon at Peck Seah ranking for its good quantity, while CHARIM Korean BBQ has the best quality. But they have since been overtaken by Story One, as it is now ranking for both quantity AND quality! All the side dishes at Story One were terrific, but hubs and I had our favourites: quail eggs with burdock, tofu with kimchi sauce and potato pancakes!

I have seen celebrities having potato pancakes on variety shows and am always interested in knowing what they taste like. I would liken it to hashbrown or rosti with a chewy texture. As these were served to us as a side dish, it would be better if it was warm. Both the quail eggs and tofu were well-seasoned and super tasty. After having too much meat, you could even clean your palate with some of the yuzu lotus root. After eating all the grilled meat, the slight tangy taste and crunchiness were nice to have.

Even though I didn’t mention all the side dishes, they were good. We just have some that we prefer to have more than the others. Oh, and the top-up of the dishes was prompt as well. Once the staff noticed the empty plate, another came out almost immediately. That was how I ended up eating a lot of potato pancakes. Hehe. (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

Yummy Spicy Buckwheat Noodles

Our spicy buckwheat noodles/naengmyeon were also served differently from other restaurants. Instead of having the cold soup already in the bowl of noodles, it was served in a separate bowl. I thought it was a good idea to allow people to adjust how dry they want their noodles to be.

Anyway, the bowl of noodles came with the spicy sauce, shredded cucumbers, pear and hard-boiled egg. After mixing the sauce with the noodles and including a few ladles of cold soup, we were good to go! The noodles were of a good enough spicy level for us without adjustment. Those who prefer to have it spicier or more sour could adjust it accordingly with the condiments given. Story One is such a premium place that their condiments are even served in these really elegant-looking pouring jugs. Cool stuff. (´ ω `♡)

Unforgettable Topnotch Meat that Melts in Our Mouth

It’s finally time to share about the meat we got at Story One! After our side dishes were served, the staff set up the BBQ pan to get ready to grill the meat. What’s interesting here at Story One is that their BBQ pan does not sit on the table. Instead, it came as a portable pan. The same goes for the cool-looking exhaust pipe. I thought that was pretty unique and definitely helps to free up space on the table after the grilling is done.

Once all that was done, it was time to bring out the premium beef and pork~! \(★ω★)/ The staff started us off with the Kurobuta Pork Belly, which was super soft, juicy and tender. It was definitely the best pork belly we have ever had so far out of all the Korean BBQ restaurants we have visited. Just when we were enjoying the pork belly and thinking that nothing could top this off, the Japanese Kobe Wagyu Strip-Loin came in!

And it was an absolute OMG moment when we put the nicely grilled beef into our mouths. It was amazingly juicy and tender with its high marbling, so much so that it immediately melted in our mouth. Granted, we don’t eat a lot of beef, but this right here at Story One was out of this world. It was so good that we didn’t want to finish it. Haha! Gaaaaah, I am drooling right now, even when I am typing this out. HALP. I need to have this again. (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

Things Worth Mentioning

Interesting Chart and Illustration on the Menu

One thing I like about Story One’s menu that I have not seen anywhere else is the little chart they have included for each cut of meat. The chart tells you the flavour, juiciness, tenderness and more. Moreover, they even have an illustration in the pork selection telling you which part of the pig the cut is coming from. I thought these were nice little touches from the restaurant. Considering not everyone has tried every kind of meat before, it allows diners to know what to expect from the meat after it is grilled to perfection. So, plus points for these little touches in the menu! ( ´ ω ` )

Good Quality Lettuce and Unique Dips for Wraps

Lettuce is a must when having a Korean BBQ. We usually have no complaints about the lettuce that we have. But once we had a chance to see and have lettuce of good quality, that is where the comparison comes in. Like Hyang Yeon, the lettuce given was of good quality and size to make a wrap with the meat and side dishes.

Besides lettuce, they also gave us some perilla leaves. I never tried it, but I have seen people having it on variety shows. Having shared this knowledge with hubs, he decided to give it a go. He said the perilla leaf was a bit dry and tasted slightly bitter. Lettuce is still the way to go for wraps if he had a choice. I guess perilla leaves are just not to our liking then. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Also, besides the usual ssamjang and salt to put together with our meat in a wrap, Story One offers two other unique options: mustard and mustard seeds! I expected it to have a spicy taste, similar to mustard, but interestingly, it doesn’t. Either that, or I didn’t put enough. Haha! Anyway, both meats were so good that I didn’t put anything on them and just ate them in their original form. (´ ε ` )♡

Something to Keep Our Grilled Meat Warm

As mentioned, the pan and exhaust pipe were removed after the grilling. You might be wondering what would happen to the grilled meat since most places usually have them on the side of the grill. Either that or they are placed on a separate plate. Well, we did have it on a separate plate, but this plate was on a warmer! They had a small tea light below it, and once the meat was done grilling on the pan, it would be transferred to the warmer. This helped the meat to stay warm while we slowly enjoyed our meal. This was an absolutely lovely touch we did not experience anywhere else but at Story One. (´• ω •`)ノ

Overall Experience at Story One Korean BBQ

What can I say? Our experience at Story One has been nothing but fantastic! The meat was of exceptional quality, the details put into everything were great, and the service was also top-notch as well. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate hubs’ birthday. Since we were the only diners in there on a rainy day, it felt as if we had booked the whole place to dine there. Haha! It was quite nice, though a tad bit too quiet, as compared to other Korean BBQ restaurants. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Staff was seen setting up the place for dinner, so I will assume there would be slightly more people at night. So, if you are thinking of coming here for dinner, making a reservation is probably still a good idea. Anyway, if you are considering coming here for a celebration, they also have private rooms, though I don’t know if they have any requirements to book them. But I think it is nice to dine in a private room with your friends and family. ( ´ ω ` )

Anyway, be it celebrations or gatherings, I highly recommend coming to Story One if you want to have some premium Korean BBQ in Singapore. I promise you that you will not be disappointed, and you might probably hang on to the last piece of meat until the very last minute as you can’t bear to finish it! ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝
