Whenever we talk about food in Tanjong Pagar, many people would relate it to Korean food since Tanjong Pagar Road has so many Korean restaurants. But as someone who used to work in the area, there are many more food options in Tanjong Pagar besides Korean food. Be it restaurants, cafes or even cheap and affordable hawker food, there are so many options there that you would be spoilt for choice. I might have already left that area, but it would be a waste to know all these places but not share with you. So, I decided to compile a list of food gems in Tanjong Pagar that you can visit for your next lunch or dinner makan! Let’s go and check them out~! ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝

Restaurants & Cafes Food in Tanjong Pagar

Chirashi King Kong

My ex-colleague told me about this place and we decided to have our lunch there. That was the first time I had Chirashi King Kong and I loved it! I had the Salmon Bowl and the salmon was really fresh. I like the sides that came with the bowl and the signature truffle rice was absolutely delish! Well, sashimi bowls are usually not cheap so I went with the light version and it was quite filling. Not something that you would eat every day but good as a Friday lunch for some indulgence. The seats are limited so better come early if you want to eat here!

P.S. They have another branch in Millenia Walk and the setting looks kind of cool. I have never been there but we ordered delivery from it before and the taste was just as good! (´• ω •`)

Potato Head Singapore

If you have ever been to Bali, you would know about Potato Head in Seminyak. I have been there once and it was quite an experience enjoying the food with the beach as our view, albeit a bit too crowded. (´・ᴗ・ ` ) Anyway, when Potato Head announced the opening of a branch in Singapore, I was kind of looking forward to it. (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

Anyway, hubs and I were there during lunch and it was rather quiet. We ordered two burgers (Baby Huey & Burning Man) and a serving of the Naughty Fries. Both burgers were good! The patties were nice and succulent and when mixed with the ingredients in the burgers, they were so flavourful. You also definitely do not want to miss out on the Naughty Fries. It was spicy but not too much so it was a good mix with the burgers. (´ ω `♡)

If you want to find a place to chill after work, I think Potato Head Singapore’s overall vibe is quite good. With the wide variety of sharing plates, it is definitely a good place to gather with a group of friends. Potato Head Singapore is also probably one of the most photographed restaurants at Keong Saik Street so don’t forget to take a photo of the exterior with the Pinnacle @ Duxton as the background! P.S. I forgot so I am reminding you! (*ノωノ)

Shake Shack

This Shake Shack is the second branch to open up in Singapore. It is housed inside the building that used to be a factory that produces Tiger Balm. Anyway, this outlet used to be really crowded with both the lunch and dinner crowd. Even when my workplace was just nearby, we had to leave really early to try to get seats in there.

The burgers are really good but for a fast food chain, I really think it is too expensive. If you really want good burgers at a place to chill, I would definitely recommend Potato Head Singapore instead. (´・ᴗ・ ` ) In case you didn’t know, there is also a mural art on the other side of the building that you should see as well. Both the building and the mural art make for some beautiful photos. The Marmalade Pantry

I did not try The Marmalade Pantry at Oasia Hotel Downtown even though we had our staycation there. But hubs and I tried their stuff at Oasia Hotel Novena before and they were good. The Spicy Crabmeat was absolutely delish with a huge amount of crabmeat with a light spice to it. Hubs tried the Hokkien Noodle and it was delicious as well. Assuming a consistent quality, I assumed this branch is good as well. I recommend coming here for a gathering with your friends after work. With good food and a beautiful restaurant, who can resist dining here? ( ´ ω ` )

The Populus

The first time I tried The Populus was during my company team-building session. Since then, I have fallen in love with their food and coffee. So whenever I have the chance, I would suggest to hubs that we should have our dinner there after work. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

My favourite item off their menu is the ‘Bounty of the Sea’ Mixed Grains Bowl. It has a mix of a lot of super delish seafood such as cod loin, scallops and crab meat and comes with some yummy vegetables as well. Every time I visit The Populus, this is my MUST-HAVE item. The Buckwheat Pancakes is also one of the cafe’s most popular items that my ex-colleagues and I shared during the session. According to the menu on the website, these two items are still available. Let’s hope the website is updated so you won’t be disappointed not being able to try them! (*/ω\)

The mixed grains bowl, flat white and burger that we had at The Populus, one of the recommended food spots in Tanjong Pagar

Besides the food, the cafe is also known for its coffee so without a doubt, I had its Flat White and it was good. The foam is nice and creamy and the coffee is bitter but not too much. If you are a coffee drinker, highly recommend you to get a cuppa coffee here as well! Anyway, the cafe is usually very crowded so you should either go earlier or make a reservation to avoid disappointment! (´• ω •`)ノ

The Public Izakaya

Hubs and I were here for my birthday dinner. As with tradition, my birthdays are always celebrated at a Japanese restaurant. Since I had to work that day, we decided to check out The Public Izakaya which was near both of our workplaces.

We ordered A LOT of things, mainly because it was my birthday meal. Haha! We ordered the Omakase Oden Set (6 pcs), which is the restaurant’s signature. There are a variety of ingredients and each of them is so flavourful after cooking for a long time in the broth. (っ˘ڡ˘ς) You MUST order this as well as the Kawa Ebi-age. The river shrimp were so nice and crispy that it was so addictive! I swear I could have a second serving if I wasn’t too full. ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝

The interior, oden and river shrimps that we ordered at The Public Izakaya, one of the recommended food spots in Tanjong Pagar

When dining at an izakaya, you must order their kushiyaki skewers such as Momoniku and Tsukune. Those were great. We also had two potato dishes, Croquette and Jaga Mentaiko. The croquette was quite good but the jaga mentaiko was too different for us to accept. Haha! The mentaiko spicy pollack roe was way too salty even when paired with the baked potatoes. It is probably more suited for Japanese people’s tastebuds. (*/ω\) Anyway, this place gets crowded during dinner time so better make a reservation or come earlier to grab yourself a seat to enjoy the izakaya vibe in town! (@´ー`)ノ゙

Unagi Tei Japanese Restaurant

Previously known as Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant, Unagi Tei had been the talk of the town with its delicious unagi rice. Having tried one of the best unagi restaurants in Kyoto, hubs and I wanted to see if Unagi Tei lives up to its expectations.

With long queues and no shelter outside the restaurant, many people don’t mind waiting in the heat. Lucky for us, there was hardly any queue and we got a seat pretty fast! We each ordered a regular Unagi Don, now known as the Unagi Tamago Don. Having tried Unagi Don at other restaurants in Singapore, I think Unagi Tei’s is the best for me. The unagi is grilled to perfection with a slight hint of charredness to it. Once in my mouth, it seemed to melt away. And just like that, the whole bowl of rice and unagi are gone. (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

The unagi bowl and the interior of Unagi Tei Japanese Restaurant, one of the recommended food spots in Tanjong Pagar
Left Image Credit: Unagi Tei Japanese Restaurant Facebook

One thing you have to know is that unagi is always expensive. So be ready to spend at least 25 SGD here. I think the Unagi Tamago Don is more than enough for me so if you are not a big eater, this would be a good choice if you are trying Unagi Tei for the first time. If you want to dine in a more comfortable setting with the same taste, I recommend visiting the Man Man Japanese Unagi outlet at Clarke Quay. Just try to visit during non-peak hours to avoid the queue~! ( ´ ω ` )

💲 Unagi Tamago Don: 25.10 SGD | Medium Unagi Don: 35 SGD

Affordable Local Food Options in Tanjong Pagar

Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre

If you are working in the area, you would definitely know about Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre. It is probably one of the more affordable places to go to for lunch as well. And this also means that the place would get crowded during lunch hour. A lot of people would always opt to leave the office much earlier so that they can get a table there (which is what we do sometimes as well!).

The stall front of Tian Xiang Ri Ji at the Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, one of the recommended food spots in Tanjong Pagar
Left Image Credit: Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre Facebook

Anyway, my favourite at this food centre is the fish maw soup from Tian Xiang Ri Ji. I think fish maw soup is not easy to find and for the price that they are selling, I would say that is quite affordable. I have tried one near my house and it cost me 10 SGD! Not only was it expensive, there was hardly any fish maw and it didn’t taste as good as the one I had at Tian Xiang Ri Ji. (´-ω-`) The cooking in the clay pot at Tian Xiang Ri Ji must have given it its umami. Don’t forget to add on the yam rice as well! (っ˘ڡ˘ς)

🥡 Stall Name: Tian Xiang Ri Ji 天香日記
💲 Fish Maw Soup: 4 or 5 SGD | Yam Rice: 1 SGD

⏰ Opening Hours: 8 AM – 8 PM (Mon-Sat), 6 AM – 8 PM (Sun)
➡️ Each stall has its own rest days and opening hours so this is something to take note of!

Dingxin Mei Shi Coffee Shop

This coffee shop is located near the Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre. There is a connecting bridge from the food centre to this area and it seems to get the overflow from the food centre. This also means that if the food centre is packed, this coffee shop would be too. LOL.

Anyway, once in a while we would come here and my go-to would usually be the caifan stall. More of a no-brainer choice and the price is also quite reasonable. One of my ex-colleagues likes the vegetarian food there. I tried it once, it wasn’t too bad. I just felt that they can be a bit stingy, counting the number of pieces that they put on your plate and putting some back when there are too many. (´・ᴗ・ ` ) The popular choice at this coffee shop seemed to be the Yong Tau Foo stall so you can consider it but note that the queue can be long! (´• ω •`)

🥡 Stall Name: Hakka Yong Tau Foo
💲 Each Piece of Ingredient (min 5+1): 0.70 SGD | Rice/Noodle: 0.70 SGD

⏰ Opening Hours: 8 AM – 8 PM (Mon-Fri), 8 AM – 3 PM (Sat), Closed on Sundays
➡️ Each stall has its own rest days and opening hours so this is something to take note of!

Everton Food Place

I came to this place once with my ex-colleague who stayed near this area. Even though it is not centrally located in the Tanjong Pagar area, the coffee shop was crowded during lunch hours. I got a Chicken Cutlet from the Western stall and the portion was actually quite reasonable. The taste was also quite good. I read some reviews on Google and seems like the Western stall is the better one at this coffee shop. You might want to give it a try! (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

🥡 Stall Name: Western Stall
💲 Chicken Cutlet w/ Rice: 5 or 6 SGD

⏰ Opening Hours: 6.30 AM – 10.30 PM
➡️ Each stall has its own rest days and opening hours so this is something to take note of!

The Teochew Kitchenette

This shop is located along the walkway into the Tanjong Pagar Plaza. This is one of the first places that my ex-colleagues brought me to on my first week with the company. The shop is known for its fish soup so I usually have the Batang Fish Soup with rice. The fish is really fresh and the soup tasted really nice.

If having hot soup is what you are afraid of on a hot day, The Teochew Kitchenette has air-conditioning inside so if you visit early, you will be able to enjoy your hot soup in comfort. As with all places around Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, this place gets crowded during lunchtime too so come earlier! (´• ω •`)ノ

💲 Batang Fish Soup: 6.50 SGD | White Rice: 0.80 SGD

Tong Ah Eating House

I always thought that this place was only good for its toasts and coffee. So when my ex-colleagues wanted to have lunch out together, I totally did not expect them to be going to Tong Ah Eating House. They said the Pig Trotters Fried Bee Hoon is a must-have here so we had that and some other dishes for sharing. I think it was okay. It was definitely unique since I had never heard of this dish before. Worth a try if you are coming here for its tze char.

We also ended up ordering some toast to share. I mean how can you not have that?! The toast was not too bad. It would be a good alternative for Yakun since we don’t have that within the vicinity. In comparison, Yakun still wins hands-down for me. ⸜( *ˊᵕˋ* )⸝ As for the kopi, I think it was too sweet for my liking. I tried ordering siew dai and it was still sweet so I stopped getting coffee from them. (*/ω\)

Korean & BBQ Food Options in Tanjong Pagar

After visiting so many Korean BBQ restaurants in Singapore, CHARIM Korean BBQ takes the cake of being the best! The meat there is of high quality and the service was impeccable. And don’t get me started on how absolutely good the side dishes were. If you’re thinking of checking out O.BBa BBQ, I suggest giving CHARIM Korean BBQ a go instead. You won’t regret it! (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant

Before one of my ex-colleagues left the company, this Korean restaurant was one of our favourite places to go for lunch. We would always go for its lunch menu and I would always order the Soft Tofu Stew. Food and service were generally quite good here. I vaguely remembered her farewell lunch to be Korean BBQ and it wasn’t bad. It has a good variety of side dishes as well.

Guiga Korean BBQ Restaurant has since been renovated and it looks so different now. It has such a modern look and feel to it, very different from how it used to be. This restaurant is also one of the Korean restaurants that serve Ganjang Gejang so I might come back someday to try it out. Recent reviews about the place are still good so definitely worth checking it out! ( ´ ▽ ` )/

Hyang Yeon BBQ 3 (Peck Seah)

Located on Peck Seah Street, Hyang Yeon BBQ 3 is the one you should keep an eye out for if you are looking for a restaurant outside of Tanjong Pagar Road. The service and food are both fantastic. Besides that, it also has a few unique touches that really set it apart from other Korean BBQ restaurants. Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time if you want to dine there during dinner time! („• ᴗ •„)

Noodle Star K

I love the bibim naengmyeon here at Noodle Star K! This place probably has one of the spiciest ones I have ever eaten but it was so delicious. For those who are not good with spicy food, don’t worry as there are other Korean noodles for you as well! I tried the mandu with my ex-colleagues and felt that they tasted normal.

O.BBa BBQ is one of Singapore’s most well-known Korean BBQ restaurants. With our workplaces nearby, hubs and I were eager to see if it lived up to its reputation. We were caught off guard by the incredibly long queue during our first attempt. But we didn’t give up and gave it another shot, and I must say, it was a worthwhile experience. ⸜( ´ ꒳ ` )⸝

O.BBa Jjajang

Unlike O.BBa BBQ, O.BBa Jjajang does not serve Korean BBQ. Instead, it is famous for its Jjajangmyeon, as mentioned in the restaurant name. I went there with my ex-colleague once and interestingly, there wasn’t a queue. I am not sure if the situation has changed but if you are interested in some jjajangmyeon or jjampong, you might want to give O.BBa Jjajang a try! (´• ω •`)

Sin Manbok

Sin Manbok caught our attention with its impressive 1,000+ reviews and outstanding 4.6-star rating – even surpassing O.BBa BBQ in this aspect! Even though the meat we had was average, what left an impression on us was the number of complimentary items they brought to our table. We were surprised not once but twice with their generosity! (´• ω •`) So if you happen to be in the area for Korean BBQ, Sin Manbok is definitely worth considering!

Twins Korean Restaurant

This has got to be my ex-colleague and my most-visited Korean restaurant in Tanjong Pagar. We frequented it so many times that I have lost count of the number of times we were there. Haha! (*/ω\) I have tried a lot of food from their menu, ranging from jjampong, dakgalbi (spicy grilled chicken), kimchi fried rice and tofu stew. Out of everything, my favourite was the tofu stew. I just simply love the soup and rice combination with some side dishes. There is air-conditioning in the restaurant so you don’t have to worry about sweating in the heat.

The kimchi fried rice, tofu stew and grilled chicken I had at Twins Korean Restaurant, one of the recommended food spots in Tanjong Pagar

The jjampong has a reasonable number of ingredients and a lot of vegetables. The portion for the dakgalbi with rice was HUGE but tasty, though it might get a bit too much after a while. (´・ᴗ・ ` ) The kimchi fried rice was nice and simple as well. We also ordered the fried chicken to share and it was so much that we couldn’t finish them. Haha! Anyway, I just checked the menu and realised they have already revamped the whole menu. So do take my review as a reference since I don’t know what else has changed since I last visited! ( ´ ω ` )

After-Food Happiness: Dessert & Coffee in Tanjong Pagar

📢 UPDATE (January 2024): After 19 years at Tanjong Pagar, Chocolat N’ Spice has decided to end its operations here as of 23 December 2023. If you are still craving their muffins after their closure, do consider checking out the other two branches they have in Singapore at Telok Blangah and Shunfu Market!

My ex-boss raved about this place’s muffin every time. I tried it once when hubs bought it home for me to try. He got us the Chocolate Chip Muffin, and it was quite good. I loved how soft and fluffy the muffin was. If you are looking for a good tea-break food, you might want to consider this affordable muffin! (ᵔ◡ᵔ)

I tried the pistachio ice cream from this first branch at South Bridge Road and it tasted really good. It is probably one of the better pistachio ice cream out there. Ji Xiang Confectionery

Hubs has been working in the area before me and he shared with me about this legendary shop at Everton Park. Ji Xiang Confectionary has been around since the 80s and is known for its ang ku kueh. To this day, the shop is still popular with people, young and old. Every time I walk by this place, there will always be a long queue.

I have tried both the Peanut and Sweet Bean ones and they were both really good. The skin is soft, thin and slightly chewy with a generous amount of fillings. Both flavours are also not too sweet. Local Coffee People

This is my favourite coffee place to go to whenever we have lunch at International Plaza. Do not be deceived by the long queue, it actually moves quite fast as the service staff serves up drinks at an unbelievable speed. Haha! The coffee is served in a big cup and at a reasonably affordable price as well. You should definitely get a cup of tea or coffee here if you are in the building.

Anyway, sadly all my favourite stalls at International Plaza are no longer there so I cannot recommend any food there. There used to be a good Vietnamese stall, which was replaced during the pandemic. If you know where the previous stall has moved to, let me know in the comments! (@´ー`)ノ゙

The cakes at Nesuto are absolutely gorgeous and photo-worthy. Since the last time hubs and I visited was so long ago, I could hardly remember if the cakes were too sweet. I have read some reviews on Google saying that the cakes are too sweet now and gets crowded during peak hour. We came by this cafe before the dinner crowd so we had a rather peaceful time there.

With so many restaurants in the vicinity and not a lot of dessert shops, this place will definitely be crowded after dinner. So if you are thinking of dropping by, do take note of the possibility of a queue. The shop has since been renovated and things have changed so take this review as a reference. Nylon Coffee

Nylon Coffee has one of the best Western coffee you can get in this area. Whenever hubs and I drop by, we would always order a cup of Flat White each to go. The foam is creamy and the coffee is just the right amount of bitterness. It is an absolutely good cup of coffee that would wake you up from your food coma. If you love their coffee and want to buy the coffee beans that they use, Nylon Coffee also has an area selling bags of coffee beans and some merchandise as well! ⸜(*ˊᗜˋ*)⸝

BONUS: Food Spots in Chinatown, Walking Distance from Tanjong Pagar

If you don’t mind walking slightly further from Tanjong Pagar, there are also some affordable food spots that you can find in the Chinatown area. In case you need some ideas for your next lunchtime, let me share with you what good food you should try in Chinatown! (´• ω •`)ノ

Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre

Located just beside the famous Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, the Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre is popular with both locals and foreigners. So if you are here for lunch, either come earlier to beat the crowd or be prepared to wait for available seats!

Anyway, my favourite stall has got to be Nanu Fish Soup Laksa for its sliced fish soup. Besides the food being good, the owner is also very nice and friendly! I always had a good chat with him while waiting for my food. ( ´ ω ` ) Another famous food stall is Zhong Guo La Mian Xiao Long Bao. I tried Xiao Long Bao and the Szechuan Spicy Wanton with hubs while on our staycation at Oasia Hotel Downtown and they were quite good. I have also tried their Szechuan Spicy Noodle, Sour & Spicy Noodle and Dumpling Noodle. My favourite is the Szechuan Spicy Noodle with its peanut gravy which was absolutely delish!

The fish soup, spicy wanton and xiao long bao I had at Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre

You should also absolutely NOT miss out on buying a cup of coffee from The 1950’s Coffee. The stall always has a long queue, mainly with the elderly who love their coffee as well. I always their kopi siew dai (coffee with less sugar) and it always helped to get me off the after-lunch food coma. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Maxwell Food Centre

Compared to the Chinatown Complex, Maxwell Food Centre definitely attracts more tourists. Putting aside famous stalls, there are some other food stalls that I frequented here in the past as well. ( ´ ω ` )

Oriental Duck Stall is my go-to for its braised duck rice or noodles. I love how tasty the braised duck and rice is. I usually go for the duck rice as I find it hard to justify the price for a bowl of noodles. (*/ω\) If you don’t mind the heat, the porridge at Zhen Zhen Porridge is really good as well. I usually order the century egg and chicken porridge.

A meal at Maxwell Food Centre would not be complete without a cup of coffee from 1950’s Coffee! Yes, this is the same brand as the one at Chinatown Complex and the quality is good as well. And if you are early, you might want to get your hands on some ondeh-ondeh and tapioca cake from Heng Heng Ondeh-Ondeh & Tapioca Cake. I have tried it before and it was really good! (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

P.S. Do you know that Fairfield Methodist Church’s Encounter Lounge is open for the lunchtime crowd on Thursdays and Fridays? If you want to dine in a more comfortable setting, you can consider checking it out next time!

Mount Faber Nasi Lemak

This eatery used to be along Kreta Ayer Road and has since moved to Sago Station. This is yet another affordable option near my former workplace that we like to come by if we want a quick lunch. Most people would order chicken wings when coming here to eat. But I don’t want to dirty my hands so I prefer to get their otah together with a sunny-side up and ikan bilis with peanuts. Pair everything with their chilli and delicious coconut rice, it was a simple and delicious meal. If you don’t want to think about what to order, you can always go with their set meal!

Final Thoughts on Food Gems in Tanjong Pagar

There are just way too many food options in Tanjong Pagar. Be it affordable ones at food centres and eateries, Korean BBQ restaurants or just simply restaurants, we are generally spoilt for choice when in this area. But considering the cost, most of the working crowd would usually go for food at the food centres or eateries. That being said, Fridays are always the best to check out those slightly expensive places to reward yourself with a good meal before the weekend. At least that was what we used to do! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Anyway, I hope this list of food gems in Tanjong Pagar has given you a good idea of what you can eat while in this area. If you think there are any stalls or restaurants that I should visit, do let me know in the comments! I will be more than happy to check it out and feature in this list as well! (´ ω `♡)
