After waiting for more than two years, we are finally travelling out of Singapore! And as per our plan, we are going to visit The Residence Bintan as our first location~! 。゚( ゚^∀^゚)゚。 Since we have been so out of touch with travelling, we thought going to Bintan would be easier for us to get back into the momentum.

We went to The Residence Bintan during the off-peak period, before the Labour Day – Hari Raya long weekend. From our conversation with one of the staff, it seems like the resort is fully booked for that long weekend! Honestly, this made both hubs and me very happy for them. ( ´ ω ` )

It has been 1+ week since we are back from The Residence Bintan. Procrastination gets the better of me and yes, I am finally ready to share about our fantabulous trip to the wonderful The Residence Bintan~! (o˘◡˘o) So onwards to sharing with you about our stay with The Residence Bintan~! ☆ミ(o*・ω・)ノ

The Residence Bintan Package – Sanctuary & Beachfront Villa

We previously booked a stay with The Residence Bintan back in 2020. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we had to postpone the trip infinitely. And with the re-opening of both countries, we were finally able to fulfil the reservation~! (*´▽`*)

Accommodation at The Residence Bintan

The Residence Bintan offers a wide range of accommodation and it is a resort that is suitable for both families as well as couples to visit. Besides the Garden Terrace and Upper Sea View Suite, all of their remaining accommodation comes with a private pool. A private pool is hard to come by in Bintan if you have ever looked at all the Bintan resorts.

Our original reservation was a stay at the Sanctuary Villa. There is only ONE Sanctuary Villa in the resort and it offers the best view of the South China Sea. As mentioned in my older blog post, one of the staff told us about the Sanctuary Villa and that is how we got interested in this villa. We are suckers for hearing the sea waves and together with having an unblocked view of the South China Sea? WE ARE IN! (☆ω☆)

Since it has been a long time since we travelled, hubs and I decided to extend our stay at The Residence Bintan by staying at the Beachfront Villa as well. Honestly, I think we love our stay at the Beachfront Villa much more than the Sanctuary Villa. I will be sharing the reasons with you later in the post so read on~! (´ ∀ ` *)

Our Package for the Sanctuary and Beachfront Villas

Our original package at the Sanctuary Villa was an All-Inclusive Island Holiday package that The Residence Bintan was offering before the pandemic. Hubs and I didn’t expect them to match everything since things were different now but the resort still did their best to match the value for us. So here’s a quick look at what was in our package:

4D3N Stay at the Sanctuary Villa

  • Daily breakfast at The Dining Room
  • Meals are all covered under the package
  • Choice of selected alcoholic beverages, mocktails, juices, coffee and tea
  • Two-way scheduled shared land transfer

The package originally included set lunches at The Dining Room or buffet and set dinners at Rica Rica, The Dining Room or buffet. Since Rica Rica was not open during our visit and there were no longer buffets with low occupancy, the resort offered to have all our meals covered while we stay at the Sanctuary Villa.

3D2N Stay at the Beachfront Villa

  • Daily breakfast at The Dining Room
  • 15% off for a minimum of 2 nights’ stay
  • Two-way scheduled shared land transfer

We booked our extended stay under the resort’s Book Now and Stay Later offer. If you’re interested, the offer is valid for stays from now until the end of December 2022~! (´ ∀ ` *)

It’s Finally Time to Travel~!!!!

Not knowing what the travel situation would be like hubs and I decided to opt for the Emerald class for the ferry ride. Well, it’s good to know that travelling during the off-peak period comes with less crowd so we would most likely be taking the Economy class in future. Haha! Save money yoz~ (>ω^)

Anyway, one of the perks of travelling in the Emerald class is that you get to enjoy some peaceful times in the lounge which, surprisingly, had quite some people in there as well. Another perk is not having to rush ahead of everyone to try to get a good seat on the ferry! But if travelling during the off-peak period, I doubt there was ever a need to rush. So choose your travel dates wisely if you have the luxury to do so! ( ´ ▽ ` )

Sus-ing on the Customs Clearance Process…

Another perk of being in the Emerald class is that you could just sit in the VIP lounge while waiting for your customs clearance. Yeah, you could just enjoy some drinks, and eat some biscuits while someone would handle the customs clearance with your passport. I don’t know how that works and I am always sus about it. (¬‿¬ )

Anyway, there’s no guarantee that you would clear the customs faster than if you are queuing by yourself. I think… I mean since we are travelling during the off-peak period, it seems like customs clearance is gonna be quite fast. We waited for some time before we got back our passports. Not like we have anything to complain about since we were just lounging. Just pity the staff waiting for us outside the lounge. (*/ω\)

The VIP lounge has undergone a huge change since the last time we were here. They have shifted it from the main building to a separate building and it looks so beautiful now. Much more spacious and has more seats to cater to more guests. So if you’re using the Emerald class and coming back to Singapore, checking in is done at the separate building with the VIP lounge instead of via the ticket counter at the main building! And as always, passports go to them while you just chill. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Onwards to The Residence Bintan~!

As with our previous trip, the land transport provided is shared. Not sure if the other couple had to wait long for us ’cause I am pretty sure they seem to clear the customs faster than us. Sorry! <(_ _)> Anyway, once we got on the transport, welcome cookies were given to us and they were so yummylicious~! Bottled drinks were also provided and I love that they are using glass bottles to be environmentally friendly. (b ᵔ▽ᵔ)b

After about 1.5 hours, we finally got to The Residence Bintan! I was so happy to step out of the vehicle and breathe in the lovely air of the resort. I have missed travelling so much and was happy to finally be at a place of relaxation. We took our seats and welcome drinks were served. We enjoyed the slight sea breeze in the airy reception area while the staff went through the check-in process with us.

Once all is good, it’s time to venture to the Sanctuary Villa! Quite a distance away, quite a buggy ride and quite a hike. ٩(× ×)۶

Journey to the Sanctuary Villa~

The journey to the Sanctuary Villa is an arduous one. You would have thought a buggy ride would solve the problem of how far the villa is from the reception area but NO. The worst is yet to come… There is a hike to the villa that would catch you off guard and take your breath away! (x_x)⌒☆

Yeah, just trying to be dramatic there. But for reals, the Sanctuary Villa is located quite a distance away from the reception area. Just when I thought we have reached, there was a climb DOWN and then some steps UP for us to reach the villa. It’s as if like it’s a journey to the end of the earth. It was SUPER tiring for us to walk to our villa and I pity the staff carrying our luggage. I wish there was an easier way for us to reach the Sanctuary Villa but I guess that’s the price to pay for the exclusivity of the villa. So yeah, be prepared to have a good workout when staying at the Sanctuary Villa, sore muscles are guaranteed. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Anyway, being located almost at the end of the resort, it felt rather quiet throughout our whole stay at the Sanctuary Villa. There was some noise once in a while when some guests are exploring the beach area I think? But otherwise, it’s just us and the sound of the waves during high tide. Not sure if it’s ‘cos of the period that we went but we do love some peace for a true relaxation away from home. ♡ (⇀ 3 ↼)

The One and Only Sanctuary Villa

Mosquito Net to Keep You Safe at Night~

Since the Sanctuary Villa is located in a zone with more trees and plants, there were on and off small insects flying around. A mosquito net is also placed around our bed but we hardly experienced any major mosquitoes or bugs issues in the bedroom (looking at you, Cempedak Island!). We brought along an electric bug swatter so that hubs can help with the insect extermination. Anyway, I am VERY SCARED OF BUGS so most times I would try to avoid resorts that are too close to nature. Hubs would also usually help to check the toilet for bugs before I use them. Haha! So thankful to have him around to help ward off the insects and bugs. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

A hygiene pack was given in simple cloth packaging, which includes the usual items – disposable mask, hand sanitiser and alcohol wipe. We still wear our masks while walking around the resort. More often than not, it seems like there were only the two of us so we usually took off our masks to enjoy the fresh air most times. But still, a good idea to bring your own masks to last through the whole stay when the rules of the resort still say so. (* ̄▽ ̄)b

Generally, both hubs and I had a good night’s sleep. The bed was comfortable and the pillow was okay. I would have wished for the pillow to be slightly fluffier or higher to be more comfortable. The blanket looks normal but was quite “thick”. We had to adjust to having colder air conditioning else it was too hot to sleep under the blanket. Or maybe the mosquito net was blocking the airflow. ┐(‘~`;)┌

Toilet is a Tad Bit Humid but Still Good for Relaxation

As compared to the bedroom, the toilet can be a tad bit too humid. This is mostly ‘cos the toilet is actually “opened” to the outside as the sides of the toilet are covered by movable panels instead of a solid wall. The purpose of the panels is to allow you to open them to enjoy some breeze and view but I think in this case, it caused the air in the toilet to be a bit too humid. The openness also allows small insects to get into the bathroom. We could also hear the loud waves while using the toilet. Not peaceful and to be honest, I don’t enjoy toilet time at the Sanctuary Villa. (´-ω-`)

Basic amenities were given such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, cotton pad and shower cap. We usually brought our own so sometimes I don’t look through the toilet amenities but that is what I remembered. The hairdryer is also found in the drawer under the sink.

Good Size Bathtub, Bad Shower Placement

The bathtub is of a good size to fit two adults! The resort used to give bath salts for use in the bathtub but looks like they have stopped doing that. As usual, we brought our own bath bomb for a slippery good time in the bathtub. (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚

The shower area is just beside the bathtub, which I didn’t like. The shower floor would get a bit slippery after our shower, most likely from the shower gel. Even when the floor dries up, the slipperiness is still there so I didn’t like that the bathtub is just right beside the shower area. Getting out of a bathtub might already be slippery PLUS a slippery floor. Room for disaster? But that’s just me. My brain is always providing me with many Final Destination scenarios. Don’t like it but it helps to make me more alert to dangers I guess. ┐(‘~`;)┌

Putting aside the slipperiness, the shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are good. Usually, hotel/resort shampoo would dry my hair a lot, especially since I have bleached hair. The shampoo here at The Residence Bintan works like magic. The conditioner makes it even better. So I give them many thumbs up for that. And I guess I paid the price with a slippery floor? Haha! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Sound of the Waves = White Noise?

Remember when I said we are suckers to hearing the sound of the waves? Well… The sound of the waves was nice but not so much when we could still hear it at night. Since it’s high tide at night, be prepared to keep hearing the waves. Hubs said that it was a bit much for him but I think I tuned out after that.

The one thing that was annoying me was actually some humming sound coming from somewhere on the first night. I don’t remember if we still hear it on the subsequent nights but something to note while staying at the Sanctuary Villa~ (´• ω •`)

Welcome to the Sanctuary Villa Infinity Pool

To be honest, I was actually surprised by how open the deck chairs are to the public. Once we walk up the stairs to the Sanctuary Villa, the first thing we see are the deck chairs. I was expecting a bit more privacy with the space but seems like the resort has chosen to make this space quite open to the public. I mean not like the other villas are perfectly enclosed but since the Sanctuary Villa is meant to be more secluded, I was hoping for more privacy. (・・ ) ?

But putting the openness of the deck chairs aside, which we hardly use, the position of the infinity pool is PERFECT. We would be able to walk out of the pool deck door and we would have an infinite view of the South China Sea in front of us. Besides an infinite sea view, we were also able to see the beautiful sunset and some of the sunrise. This is the main perk of staying with the Sanctuary Villa and we think it was all worth it.

Relax by the Pool or Being Silly in the Pool?

Sun is constantly shining on the pool deck and we made good use of the time to enjoy A LOT of time in the pool. Did our usual posing by the pool and of ‘cos, doing silly things with our travelling soft toy buddies. (´ ∀ ` *) We also realised we could observe a lot of activities at the pool. There would be fishing boats or even birds flying back home before sunset. Highly recommend hanging out in the pool! (❤ω❤)

I was scared sh*t getting to the corner of the pool. Was worried I would fall and… ☠

Anyway, you can continue using the pool even at night since there are pool lights. But, we realised there were just too many small insects flying around our heads when in the pool so we had to retreat back to our room. ε=ε=┌( >_<)┘

Timelapse of the beautiful sunset, more beautiful in person!

Needless to say, we turned many shades darker after the first day. Two years of hiding in Singapore and boom, dark in one day. Haha! (//ω//)

Watching Tidal Activities are a MUST DO at the Sanctuary Villa

One thing that you MUST DO when you stay at the Sanctuary Villa is to watch the tidal activities. You would be able to experience high and low tides at this resort. During low tide, sandbanks would appear and you can actually venture out to walk on them. But the interesting thing to look out for is actually about 1 hour before the low tide. There is this special “salt flat” effect that occurs during this period. Since there are no waves, the water would be so calm it reflects clearly what’s in the sky. We saw this phenomenon when I woke up trying to catch the sunrise from a corner of our villa. To be honest, this phenomenon is even better than the sunrise. I promise you.

There was actually a rainbow in the photo, that I captured in another photo. This scene was BEAUTIFUL. ♥

The other thing that you MUST DO is watch the seawater coming in to fill up the sandbank. This usually happens probably around 1 hour before the high tide, I think? The filling up can happen so fast that in just a few minutes, seawater is already covering the sandbank so don’t miss this out!

Timelapse of the incoming water 🙂

Video Room Tour of the Sanctuary Villa

Since I took some videos to create Instagram reels during my stay at The Residence Bintan, I have put together this room tour for you if you are interested to see the whole Sanctuary Villa through a video. Enjoy~! (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡

Goodbye Sanctuary and Hello Beachfront Villa~

Communication at the resort can be done through Whatsapp. Not sure if this is something new or just during this period. Anyway, the resort informed us that the Beachfront Villa is ready and when hubs texted them that we are ready, the assistant general manager and one of the staff came to greet us. Goodbye to 4 days of the daily hike up and down to the Sanctuary Villa and onwards to some beach fun at the Beachfront Villa! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Hubs did a great job capturing my photo. Upgrading him to Instagram Husband now. ♥

Once we got to the Beachfront Villa via the buggy ride, we immediately felt the difference between this villa and the Sanctuary Villa. The Beachfront Villa felt much quieter, since the sea is further from us, and the air-conditioning felt colder in comparison as well. Everything that came with the Sanctuary Villa is also available in the Beachfront Villa. However, there are certain things about the Beachfront Villa that sets it apart from the Sanctuary Villa and that makes us like it more than the Sanctuary Villa.

More Walking Space, Less Chance of Injury for Clumsy People

I felt that the bedroom size of the Beachfront Villa is bigger than the Sanctuary Villa, even though the overall floor space of the latter is bigger. Probably more space is given to the pool and deck for the Sanctuary Villa or simply ‘cos of the overall room layout, the Beachfront Villa’s bedroom felt more comfortable for me to move around.

In the Sanctuary Villa, there is a round table and lounge chairs placed close to the pool deck door. I find it rather hard to walk around them. And since I am a clumsy person, I would most likely knock into things unknowingly and give myself some unknown bruises. (-ω-、)

I did bruise myself while staying at the Sanctuary Villa but not ‘cos of the table or chairs, but ‘cos of a wooden bench that was by the pool. In my excitement to try to capture the sunrise in the morning, I didn’t notice the chair and my knee hit it. REAL HARD. A big patch of bruising appeared after and it was painful like sh*t. ☆(#××)

Sofa for More Chilling in the Villa

Most times when we are in the Sanctuary Villa, I would find that I don’t have anywhere to chill. We would sit on our beds or on the floor when we have our in-room dining. The rug is quite rough so sitting on the rug is also not as comfortable. It was more comfortable to sit on the in-room slippers than on the rug. (・_・;)

There is, however, a sofa and a nook where you can just sit and chill at the Beachfront Villa. Honestly, I really love these a lot. It was really comfortable to just sit on the sofa to enjoy our in-room dining or just chill and watch some TV. (っ˘ω˘ς )

More Comfortable Toilet and Better Shower Space

As I mentioned earlier, the Beachfront Villa felt much quieter since we are further away from the sea. But that also means that the toilet was also more peaceful and not humid at all! Interestingly, no bugs were found in the toilet here as compared to the Sanctuary Villa. Might also be the location of the Beachfront Villa but I felt so much safer using the toilet here.

The shower area is also separate from the bathtub, which means more space to stand around before, during and after showering! We don’t have to worry about the slippery floor situation before our shower since there was a lot of standing space before entering the shower area.

A More Sheltered Private Pool for Less Sun and Less Burn

We actually enjoyed using the private pool at the Sanctuary Villa but we enjoyed chilling in the private pool at the Beachfront Villa even more. As compared to the Sanctuary Villa, the private pool is more sheltered from the sun, which means that you would be able to enjoy more pool time with less of the burning hot sun. This might not be a good thing for some people but after FOUR days of constant sun, of which we got burnt after the first day, we actually LOVE how comfortable it is to use the private pool at the Beachfront Villa. We didn’t even use the bathtub at the Beachfront Villa ‘cos the water temperature of the private pool was so comfortable that it was as good as using the bathtub but bigger. ٩(♡ε♡)۶

In terms of the view and privacy, the private pool at the Sanctuary Villa wins hands down. We stayed in a different Beachfront Villa in 2019 and we hardly have a view from our private pool as there were trees in front. This time we got lucky and had a small nook to let us peek out into the sea, though the view is nothing compared to the Sanctuary Villa.

As the path outside of the pool area is for public access, it might feel more exposed though most times hardly anyone would walk that close. Beachfront Villas are also closer together so you might hear neighbours enjoying their pool time as well. So as long as you don’t anyhow hanky panky in the pool, you should be okay! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Say Byebye to Leg Days~

At The Residence Bintan, you can always call for a hubby buggy ride to go anywhere. Since I cannot cycle, walking is the way for us to walk around and we prefer that to take a buggy. As I mentioned, access to the Sanctuary Villa requires a lot of climbing up and down the steps, which you can see in the video I have shared. So when we moved to the Beachfront Villa, it was just so much better to walk back and forth to our villa. ( ´ ω ` )

Anyway, I swear that I am going to learn how to cycle ‘cos I find that it’s such a useful skill to have. I should have done that at the resort since there is so much space and there is hardly anyone around us. I could have mastered the skill at the resort! Grrrrr. (ノД`)

Some Maintenance Needed Here~

It seems like I have everything good to say about the Beachfront Villa but there are some issues we faced during our stay.

A Wonky Wardrobe Light and A Spoilt Nespresso

Firstly, the wardrobe lights do not turn off by themselves even when the doors are closed. It seems like the door was not closed tightly, hence the lights would stay on. Normally not an issue if you don’t have a problem sleeping with lights on but a problem for me ‘cos I prefer to sleep in the dark. Anyway, once hubs forced the door closed, we leave it that way and didn’t touch it. All was good then. (´• ω •`)

Then came the Nespresso. We didn’t use the one at the Sanctuary Villa so we don’t know if it works but the one we had was not working. At all. We don’t usually use the coffee machine or drink any tea in the room so not a major problem for us. We ended up drinking our own Old Town Coffee instead, which I always bring with me overseas. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

A Rusty Clothesline Knob

The clothesline in the bathroom was also not working. We just couldn’t turn the knob to get the clotheslines out. It seems like the knob has turned rusty hence it doesn’t work. We used the clothesline a lot at the Sanctuary Villa since we didn’t want to pack a lot and washed some of our clothes every day. Luckily it only happened when we moved to the Beachfront Villa ‘cos we had enough clean clothes by then to last us until the last day.

All of the above, we didn’t highlight to the resort as it wasn’t a big issue for us. We understand that it might probably be ‘cos there wasn’t enough manpower in the resort to ensure everything was properly maintained. With the occupancy rate coming up, staff have mentioned that the resort is increasing its manpower by getting former staff back to the resort. So hopefully the next time we are back there, things would be better already. (´• ω •`) ♡

Video Room Tour of the Beachfront Villa

Similar to that of the Sanctuary Villa, I have taken some videos for the Beachfront Villa as well! So enjoy the room tour~! (´ ∀ ` *)

Other Things Worth Mentioning

Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Why Are You Beside the Bed?!

Not sure when this started but I NEVER like having the mirror next to where I sleep. It might be a Chinese thing, though hubs doesn’t seem to care much about that, according to some stories, the mirror might suck your soul in at night! Σ(°△°|||) Or actually, it’s more like you will scare yourself at night when you suddenly see yourself in the mirror. I don’t even know what’s what BUT anyway, I just don’t like having a mirror right in front of the bed.

So when we reached the Beachfront Villa, imagine my surprise when I saw the mirror RIGHT BESIDE the bed! I would usually take the right side of the bed but ‘cos of the mirror, I decided to sleep on the left, near the wonky wardrobe. (ノД`) Anyway, in the end, we managed to use the clothes hanger to put up one HUGE pool towel to block the mirror. So yep, all is good but I wish hotels/resorts would stop putting mirrors near the bed. (。T ω T。)

Nice Beach != Clean Beach?

I think more can be done to have a cleaner and nicer beach at The Residence Bintan. Nothing can be done to how soft or nice the sand feels under your feet but more cleaning needs to be done by the resort so that guests can enjoy time in the sea.

When we accessed the beach from our Beachfront Villa, I had to try to avoid quite some debris that the waves were washing up the shore. Actually, when we were observing the tidal activities, we can already see a lot of plastic bottles and what-nots being washed up to the resort’s shore. Hopefully, with more manpower, the resort would be able to have more staff to help clean up the beach areas.

Spot the Sanctuary Villa in the right photo. The white patch is actually the wall of the infinity pool. ♥

Low Light Pollution = Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars Night!

Since there is very low light pollution, you would be sure to see a sky full of stars at night! I find that it’s easier to spot them while staying at the Sanctuary Villa since you have the pool deck to go out to. Also, there is less light around the Sanctuary Villa as compared to the Beachfront Villa. So if you’re staying there, do remember to look up and admire the starry starry night~

Desserts from Turndown Service

We usually don’t require any turndown or room makeup service. So after turning down a turndown service on the first night, we were surprised to see what appeared on the work table when we came back from our dinner on the second night. A wooden box. And inside it was some dessert! Ooooooh. I have not had turndown dessert from a resort for a very long time, a gesture that I find is very unique.

Anyway, I don’t know if turndown dessert is given every night. We didn’t get it on the first night at the Beachfront Villa and we thought it was only given at the Sanctuary Villa. But then we got it on the last night we were at the Beachfront Villa so… I don’t know. We didn’t have it when we stayed here in 2019 as well, so maybe it’s a new initiative? (´ ∀ ` *)

I would not be touching on the food and beverages offered at The Residence Bintan in this post but I would like to mention that the resort has a really great pastry chef. We love almost EVERY SINGLE ONE of the resort’s pastries, ranging from the morning bread and croissant to the mealtime desserts. The pastry chef has never failed us. So we were rather happy to have the turndown dessert appearing in our room. (❤ω❤)

Overall Experience

With Bintan being in such close proximity to Singapore, The Residence Bintan is definitely a resort that we would want to go back to again and again. Even with the wide selection of resorts/hotels in Bintan, nothing hits close to what The Residence Bintan can provide at the price range that they are offering, i.e. a villa with a private pool with beach access.

Since Singapore and many other countries have relaxed their travelling measures, it has made it easier for hubs and me to travel again. As such, Bintan would be taking a backseat for a while. But yes, hubs and I are definitely going back to The Residence Bintan when we have the chance. And this time, it would just be the Beachfront Villa all the way~ We might even request to stay at the same villa if possible, as long as the resort sort out the issues in the villa. (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

As I have mentioned, I have just way too much to share about our experience at The Residence Bintan since we had such a long stay with them. If you have yet to read other parts of the series, you might want to check out them now:

Information about The Residence Bintan

In case you’re interested, below is a map of The Residence Bintan that the resort staff has sent to us. I have marked out the location of the Sanctuary Villa as well as our Beachfront Villa for your reference! Note that there are trees in front of the Beachfront Villas so there’s no guarantee of the beach view from your private pool. It’s all about luck. (o・ω・o)
