How Did We End Up at My Secret Cafe?

I don’t know how many people know about My Secret Cafe but I did not know about it until our unexpected visit there. If you have read my blog post on The Inside House, you might know what happened. So the story goes like this.

Khao Soi Khun Yai was CLOSED!

It was our first visit to Chiang Mai and our initial plan was to have Khao Soi as our first meal in Chiang Mai. A lot of people were recommending Khao Soi Khun Yai for its khao soi. So we thought we would visit it for our first meal. But alas, the restaurant was closed when we got there! I thought we were late but a sign on the gate says it would be closed until a certain date. Luck has it that it would only open again on the day that we fly to Bangkok. So sadly, we did not get to have khao soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai. (ノД`)

Restaurants We Want to Visit Were CLOSED!

As if we were not unlucky enough, it took us forever to find a place to have lunch. I don’t know if it has got to do with the day we arrived or if we were just plain unlucky but every single restaurant that was highly rated on Google Maps was NOT OPENED! By then, I was already drained of energy. ٩(× ×)۶

It was a really hot day in Chiang Mai and the heat was getting to me. To add more salt to my wounds, I was breaking out in cold sweats after all the walking. This is probably all thanks to having just recovered from COVID-19. So after all the walking and not having found one restaurant that we wanted, I was feeling annoyed. And it was not even one hour upon our arrival in Chiang Mai! (´-ω-`)

And Then We Found My Secret Cafe…

As I was feeling so hot and heated, we visited a 7-11 to cool ourselves down while deciding what to eat. We came by a cafe with good reviews just opposite where we were located and decided to head over to check it out. And that was how we came by My Secret Cafe, a cosy cafe located on a quiet street in Chiang Mai Old City.

My Secret Cafe, A Cosy Cafe in Chiang Mai Old City

My Secret Cafe is located in a small alley in Chiang Mai Old City. We were initially not sure of its location. Then we spotted a sign pointing into the small alley. Since it is located in such a conspicuous location, we were surprised to see a crowded cafe. w(°o°)w There were some outdoor seats when we got there. But on such a hot day, sitting outside was definitely not ideal for my condition back then. Luckily someone left and we managed to grab a table. Phew.

What We Ordered

We wanted to have cooked food but sadly, My Secret Cafe has limited cooked food. So we ended up ordering some cafe food instead. We had flat white, waffles and rustic bread. Saying we want cooked food and I ended up ordering bread is weird, I know. But I am a sucker for baguettes so I had to order the rustic bread. Haha! (*/ω\)

Generally, the food was not too bad. The flat white was just right for us though the coffee was not too strong. I love the rustic bread, which is basically baguettes served with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping. I was amazed at how good it was and I ended up eating most of it. (´・ᴗ・ ` )

A Digital Nomad Haven?

While we were there, the cafe was constantly full. People would leave and more would come in to grab the seats. Interestingly, there were a lot of people with their laptops. I am assuming they are all digital nomads by the looks of it. I honestly did not expect to see so many digital nomads in Chiang Mai, much less a cafe. w(°o°)w

The staff at My Secret Cafe were also very nice and friendly. And I think they are used to having digital nomads in the cafe as I saw them helping the customers arrange their tables for their usage. I am also gonna assume that the Wi-Fi in My Secret Cafe is really good as well hence so many people are using their laptops there. Power outlets are also easily found around the cafe. So I guess the cafe is kind of set up to welcome digital nomads.

Also, I was surprised by how affordable the food in Chiang Mai is. Our order of the three items cost us 255 baht (~SGD 9.80). If we were to have these in Singapore, it would definitely cost more than double the price. Just the drink alone would be almost SGD 7 – 8. So I am going to assume that this lower cost of living is what attracts digital nomads to stay in Chiang Mai as well. (´• ω •`)ノ

Overall Experience

If you are in the area, do consider dropping by this quaint cafe in a quiet alley of Chiang Mai Old City. If you are a digital nomad, you would definitely love it here for what they have to offer, from coffee, and food to convenience. But no guarantees that you would get a seat considering how popular it is with digital nomads! (´• ω •`)
